Fruitport is located on the southern border of Muskegon County at the very end of the north branch of Spring Lake.
This town was originally founded by Edward L. Craw in 1868, who named it after himself as Crawville. It was renamed Fruitport a year later when the Pere Marquette Railroad built a station there, as the town was in the middle of a fertile fruit growing area and also a port. It eventually was incorporated as a village in 1869.
Today the town has no port, and grows no fruit.
